Growing Lion’s Mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) on hardwood pellets is one of the easiest methods for home cultivation. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide.
🌳 What You’ll Need
- Hardwood pellets (100% hardwood, no additives — oak or maple preferred)
- Lion’s Mane spawn (grain or sawdust spawn)
- Clean water
- Heat-safe grow bags with filter patches (or mason jars with breathable lids)
- Large pot or pressure cooker
- Clean workspace
- Spray bottle for misting
Step 1: Hydrate the Pellets
Hardwood pellets are compressed sawdust. When hydrated, they expand into ideal substrate.
Basic ratio:
- 5 cups hardwood pellets
- 1.4–1.6 liters (about 6 cups) boiling water
Pour boiling water over pellets in a clean container.
Cover and let sit 30–60 minutes until fully expanded and cooled.
Optional (but helpful):
Add 1 cup wheat bran or soy hulls for extra nutrition (increases yield but also contamination risk).
Step 2: Sterilize the Substrate
If you added bran → Pressure sterilize:
- 15 PSI for 90 minutes
If using only hardwood pellets (no supplements) → You can often get away with:
- Pouring boiling water (pasteurization method)
- OR pressure sterilizing for 60–90 minutes (safer)
Let cool completely before adding spawn.
Step 3: Inoculate with Lion’s Mane Spawn
Add spawn at about:
- 10–20% of wet substrate weight
Example:
- 5 lb wet substrate → use 0.5–1 lb spawn
Mix thoroughly in clean conditions.
Seal bag and shake to distribute spawn evenly.
Step 4: Incubation
- Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
- Time: 7–14 days
The bag will turn completely white as mycelium colonizes the substrate.
Lion’s Mane grows thick and cottony — this is normal.
Step 5: Fruiting
Once fully colonized:
- Cut a small “X” in the side of the bag (about 1–2 inches).
- Place in an area with:
- Indirect light
- Fresh air
- High humidity (70–90%)
Mist the air around it (not directly soaking the mushroom).
Within 5–10 days, white spines will begin forming.
Step 6: Harvest
Harvest when:
- Spines are ½–1 inch long
- Mushroom is bright white
- Before it turns yellowish
Twist and pull gently from the bag.
You may get 2–3 flushes from one bag.
Tips for Bigger Yields
- Supplement with bran (if you can sterilize properly)
- Increase fresh air exchange (Lion’s Mane needs more air than oysters)
- Keep humidity high but avoid water pooling
- Don’t overcrowd fruiting area
